Everything and the like

Oh boy – well over a month since my last post.  So much has happened, the biggest news being Canada qualifying for London! Two solid teams will be representing Canada at the 2012 Games, just 6 days away from their first matches.  Good luck Binner, Reader, Marie, and Annie!!

As for Sam and I – we’ve used this break as a reset heading into the Canadian west coast events. We played two OVA beach tour events, forfeited the first final due to Sam cramping, and then won the second final at Ashbridges in an exciting three set match.

We’ve cut back our training since returning to Canada – two sessions a week, matching that in the gym. For the past two weeks we’ve been in BC. With the Olympic break now among us we were really looking forward to claiming our second straight Vancouver Open title (Canada’s largest beach volleyball tournament) – this year the event consisted of a few American teams and all the top teams from Ontario and BC (minus Redmann/Saxton and Reader/Binstock unfortunately).

Sam and I cruised on day 1, four win in a row put us in the semi final against Garrett May and the high flying/crowd favorite, Dan Dearing.  It was probably our best match of the tournament as we cruised to a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) win. Matty Z and Chaim did the same in their semi, which meant our second tournament final against this team – good friends of ours as well as Chaim being my roommate in Toronto.

We battled in the first set coming back from being down 16-19 to tie it up at 19 all, but that was as close as we’d get – Z and Chaimer taking it 22-20.  The first set let us get the jitters out as we came out stronger in the second to take it 21-18, and continued the trend in the third set closing it out 15-10 to win the Van Open again this year!

The event keeps getting better and better. Volleyball BC really knows how to do it right, which is why it’s safe to say many athletes, and fans, are super stoked to be attending the Canadian Beach National Championships out west this year. Spanish Banks will be the venue, just west of Kitsilano Beach, August 17-19

Up next for Sam and I is the BC Provincial Championships July 28/29. This is always a radical event as it’s during the Festival of Lights – three nights of fire works down in English Bay. After BC Provincials is Center of Gravity (August 3, 4, 5) in Kelowna where Sam and I will be looking to defend our 2011 COG title leading into the Canadian National Championships.

Being out west has been a pleasure thus far, writing this while sitting at home for the first time since Christmas.  Training full time in Ontario is definitely nice since the support system is amazing but myself, along with a handful of other National Team athletes sure would love to have a full time training center here in Vancouver – maybe one day, hopefully in my career.

Anyways, I’ll do my best to update this on a more consistent basis during my time on the west coast. Look for a non-volleyball related post soon – Can’t wait to share my west coast time with all of you… here’s a teaser! Just beautiful…
